Ear surgery, also called otoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure to correct the occurrence of improperly formed ear cartilage that causes ears to fold incorrectly or to protrude excessively from the sides of the head.
Considering Ear Surgery
Ear surgery may be appropriate for you if you have:
- Overly large ears
- Ears that stick out excessively
- Dissatisfaction with a prior ear surgery
Ear surgery can improve the shape, position, or proportion of your ears. With surgery, you can create balance between the ears and the face, so that when people see you, their first impression is not your protruding ears.
Preparing for Ear Surgery
In preparation for ear surgery, you will meet with Dr. Garcia to discuss your specific concerns with your ears and how surgery can improve your appearance. Once you have decided that ear surgery is the right solution for you, Dr. Garcia will walk you through the surgical procedure in detail and provide you with instructions on how to prepare for surgery and how to care for yourself after surgery. Smokers will need to refrain from smoking two weeks before and after your surgery.
Knowing the Risks
Because ear surgery is an operation, there are certain risks involved. As a highly trained, experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Garcia takes precautions to reduce risk of complications, but complications can occur. Risks include bleeding, asymmetry in your results, infection, and changes in skin sensation.
Understanding the Procedure
For adults, the ear surgery can be performed under local anesthesia in a twilight sleep. Younger patients may need general anesthesia. You will need to wear a headband for two weeks after the surgery, and then night for an additional two weeks.
You can expect to resume normal activities within three to four weeks and full contact spots after six weeks. The postoperative discomfort is slight and usually controlled easily with oral medications.
